Our Vision

We envision Greene County as a cultural center of the Catskills and the Hudson Valley, where the quality of life is enriched by artistic and cultural programs, actively enjoyed and supported by residents and visitors alike.

Our Mission

To provide the leadership and vision necessary for our communities to work together, support the work of our artists and cultural organizations, and promote artistic and cultural opportunities for our residents and guests so that our vision may become a reality.

With this purpose, GCCA provides information and services to artists, arts organizations, cultural and educational institutions, civic groups, community agencies and the general public.  Acting as a chamber of commerce for the arts and a clearing house for the promotion of arts activities, we aim to stimulate the area's cultural and economic growth through the arts.

Community Link/Community Outreach

Acting in the belief that our mission can best be achieved by government, business, tourism, educational institutions, community groups and arts organizations - all working together, we have initiated, promoted and participated in numerous collaborative community revitalization programs, festivals and special events such as “Jazz at the Point“, Arts & Crafts sales and entertainment at the Farmers Market.  Outreach is a major focus of our work and represents one of our greatest strengths:  promoting the arts within the context of community.

Through Community Link, all our programs and activities become linked to the community and community outreach stands out as a major component of all that we do.

Facilities & Gallery Programs

To better serve our community, we maintain two year-round sites: one in the river town of Catskill, the county seat, and one in the mountain resort community of Windham.

Our main office, located at 398 Main Street in Catskill, houses galleries on two floors, a gift shop, a resource center and a grants and reference library.  Our staff of professional arts administrators and programmers assisted by a core of dedicated volunteers, conduct community outreach programs, workshops, seminars, receptions, meetings, small performances, and literary events.

A second gallery site is our Mountaintop Gallery on Main Street in Windham, staffed by a devoted and hard-working volunteer committee of professional artists and community members.  In addition to exhibitions, the gallery often accommodates lectures, readings, performances, receptions, workshops, and community events.

Since 1976, the GCCA's Gallery Programs have continued to grow in reputation and excellence.  Our exhibitions reflect the community in which we live and are designed with both public needs and the artists' interests in mind.  Annually, over 5000 people visit our galleries which showcase the work of local, regional, and national artists. We also maintain ongoing exhibits of visual arts at the Amtrak Train Station.

Youth Programs

Youth Arts Reach and Arts-in-Education provide after-school and in-school workshops, residencies, and selected performances free to Greene County youth.  Through these programs, the GCCA serves thousands of young people and employs the services of over 50 artists and arts groups annually to serve the needs of our youth.  Arts-in-Education has now expanded to Columbia County offering a regrant program for schools in the Twin Counties.

Cultural Fund Programs

Through two regrant programs, the Greene County Cultural Fund  promotes the arts by making  public funds available  to local non-profit organizations and individual artists for cultural programming. The County Initiative Program  (CIP) awards revenues provided by  the Greene County Legislature and area businesses to major county arts and cultural institutions. The Twin Counties Cultural Fund Decentralization Program (DEC), a joint effort  with  neighboring Columbia County, regrants New York State Council on the Arts funds to community organizations and agencies, including sponsored and individual artists.

Information and Services

The Information Center in the Catskill Gallery offers a Cultural Events Calendar and postings of announcements, opportunities, and resource listings for artists.  Arts Alive, produced in cooperation with Betts-Riedinger and the Columbia County Council on the Arts, is distributed to over 5,000 readers and is posted on our website.  Events calendars are published and distributed in cooperation with the Greene County Promotion Department in travel guides, seasonal brochures, weekly and seasonal calendars. Press updates are mailed regularly to nearly 500 local and regional publications, internet listings, radio and TV stations on a regular basis.
