Surface—of paintings, terrain, materials, our culture, what lies beneath and what is presented. The Extreme Surface show explores the idea of surface from all angles.

Historically, artists have often been fascinated with the buildup of paint on the surface of canvas. The subject matter becomes texture, light and shadow, layering and building a tactile surface for the eye.

Surface also refers to the earth, geology, plate tectonics, the destruction of such surfaces in natural or manmade disasters, or simply erosion.

Psychologically, we reveal certain aspects of ourselves and hide others. In Jungian terms, this is called our shadow side. What happens when suppressed traits and memories are brought to the surface? What is it exactly that the skin divides?

Our culture has increasingly become obsessed with surface—of youth, beauty, newness and now-ness, often overlooking the effect of such a narrow focus. Certain surfaces have value, and other surfaces are ignored. What is the collective impact?

“The word surface can’t help but summon up what lies beneath it–a contingent word, inseparably bound to its opposite, to the thing of which it is a part, impossible with out its antonyms: inner, deep, full, solid, cover up, sink.”

–Christa Robbins

We welcome applications for interpretations of the theme Extreme Surfaces in all media.
