Art for the Appetite

Greene County Council on the Arts “Second Floor Solos” series of one-person exhibitions presents The Food Show featuring works by Gary Shankman. The exhibition opens May 3 at the GCCA Catskill Gallery. The public is invited to the opening reception on Saturday, May 3 from 5-7 p.m. at 398 Main Street, Catskill, NY.

In The Food Show, Shankman presents a delectable feast for the eyes, combining his rich palette of oil paint and a flavorful menu of savory images. There’s something for everyone, from the sweet tooth and junk food junkie to the most refined palates of the seasoned food aficionado. Piles of chocolate glazed, cream-filled and powdered jelly doughnuts tempt the viewer, and sumptuous strawberries, glistening grapes and juicy peaches exude a freshness that is hard to resist. Even the cauliflower, peppers and turnips look tasty.

Shankman paints primarily in oils on linen and works directly from nature. In his painting, he incorporates all of his senses to complete a picture of his observations of the world around him. He is intrigued by the effects of light and color in nature and says: “Light dappling the side of a house, light creating the form of a doughnut, and light caressing the objects in a room are the subjects which fill my canvases.”

The artist is a resident of Albany, NY. His education includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Boston University and a Masters in Fine Arts in Painting from American University. He has exhibited extensively in New York State as well and throughout the Northeast.
