Salisbury Manor

Salisbury Manor

Salisbury Manor was built in 1730 by Francis Salisbury* for his oldest son, Abraham. The house is built of coursed fieldstone and was originally a story and one half high. In 1760, two more rooms and a second story were added. In 1823, Abraham Salisbury added a half story and an attic. The large slate roof is pierced at the ridge by two interior chimneys and a windowed cupola. The curving lane, flanked on either side by three foot dry stone walls, is purported to be the oldest in the county.

“The view from the edge of the terrace, on the north side of the house, is of great beauty. On one hand is the lovely plain of the Potick, bounded on the east by the wooded slope of Potick Mountain. The Katskill runs through the middle of the landscape, from the distant background to the foreground – here a swift flowing river, broken by broad ripples. From its bank the ground rises in terraces of meadows which, many years ago, were covered by a forest of huge trees. The western horizon is formed by Black Head and the graceful peaks of the Windham mountains.” – excerpt from J. B. Beers & Co. History of Greene County first published in 1884

*Francis Salisbury was the son of Captain Silvester Salisbury who, in partnership with Martin Garritsen Van Bergen, purchased the lordly estate of the Catskill Patent in 1678. The patent contained 35,500 acres.
