Wall of History Celebration and Unveiling

The completed Wall of History on the south wall of the Catskill Point Warehouse will be unveiled to the public at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11 during the Great Northern Catskills Heritage Festival at Catskill Point.

Coordinated by the Greene County Council on the Arts, the overall style of this installation is designed to create the look of a 19th Century art gallery, where paintings of all shapes and sizes were juxtaposed in a lively non-linear composition. Paintings have a theme of “great moments” in Greene County’s history on the Hudson River to memorialize the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial. As this is a permanent installation, artwork is painted on signboard and sealed for outdoor protection.

“We’re very excited to see this project come to life,” said project director Hudson Talbott. “My idea was to convey the rich fabric of our history as well as the great wealth of living talent that we have here in the region. The idea of evoking our painting heritage with a 19th Century salon style display accommodates both the sense of depth and continuity of our history as well as the distinction of the individual artist’s creative statement. It’s great to see how our artists have responded to that concept.”

After reviewing responses to a Call for Entries, 10 artists were chosen to participate:

Terrance Barrell of Catskill: “Sailing on the Hudson at Catskill Creek”
Don Boutin of Purling: “Rip Van Winkle”
Victoria Brill of Philmont: “Catskill Point”
James Cramer of Athens: “Cedar Grove: The Thomas Cole House”
Tasha Depp of Catskill: “Anti-Slavery Society”
Patti Ferrara of Catskill: “The Otis Incline Railway”
Edith Marcik of Catskill:     “The Catskill Mountain House”
Michelle Moran of Woodstock: “Kaaterskill Falls”
Enrico Scull of Catskill: “First River People”
Daniella Zeman of Catskill: “Sailing the Half Moon”

Please join us on Oct. 11 to congratulate these fine artists on their achievements and celebrate the project they have helped to create. The Great Northern Catskills Heritage Festival, sponsored by Cooperative Extension of Greene County and Greene County Tourism, starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. It features food, music, vendors, demonstrations and entertainment.
