Technical Assistance Seminar series

Starting in 2018, the Greene County Council on the Arts will offer Technical Assistance Seminars in Greene, Columbia, and Schoharie counties on a variety of subjects, chosen by community members, and facilitated by experienced community members. These seminars are free and open to the public. Registration is not required, but attendants may send questions in advance to be covered during the seminar.

Our Facilitators:

Nancy Barton is an artist and educator who directs the Prattsville Art Center and Residency, a non-profit arts organization, which she founded in 2012 following the devastation of the community of Prattsville by Hurricane Irene. Ms Barton divides her time between the Catskills and New York City, and is an Associate Professor at New York University’s Steinhardt Art Department, which she has also Chaired. The Art Center is a creative placemaking project that brings together urban and rural residents and supports community revitalization through the arts. The Center has received grants from the NEA, NYSCA, Greene County, and ArtPlace America, as well as private foundations. She has exhibited, curated and lectured on art, and placemaking in the US, Asia, Africa, and Europe. Her artwork has been shown internationally and reviewed in Artforum, Flash Art, Text Zur Kunst, and many other journals.

Wayne Sheridan was a writer and editor for The New York Stock Exchange, the Copy Director and Account Supervisor for the New York office of Dublin-based McConnell’s International Advertising, former supervisor of North American Sales Promotion for Brown-Foreman’s International Wines and Spirits, and former Marketing Manager and Account Executive for Guthrie-Maye’s Public Relations. He has served as a board member of the Boothbay Area Chamber of Commerce, served on the Board and as interim chair of the statewide Maine Writer’s & Publisher’s Alliance, founded and chaired Books in Boothbay, the largest one-day book fair in New England, now in its 15th year. He also served in marketing and sales positions for Actor’s Theatre of Louisville, the Louisville Ballet, the Boothbay Railway Village and other arts and cultural organizations. He has recently returned to his first love, freelance writing, in particular cultural criticism and poetry. Wayne has won numerous local, national and international awards for writing and marketing.

The Albany Law School Community Development Clinic, founded in 2016, is a legal resource for grassroots groups of long-time residents in low-income neighborhoods, as well as new immigrants, that don’t have access to pro bono legal services but need representation in forming a new not-for-profit, or small business, or assistance advocating for economic development in a particular neighborhood. Students, under the supervision of a professor or practicing attorney, learn key corporate law and deal closing skills, including client counseling and interviewing, negotiation, drafting, advocacy, and public speaking. Students learn the importance of pro bono and professional responsibility by servicing vulnerable populations such as domestic violence victims, and the formerly incarcerated.
